What Blooms

Thirteen flowers built petal by petal and lit before a single stroke. Four on the table, four in the garden, five in the wild.

One work at a time, hung large on a lit wall. Scroll, swipe or use the arrow keys to walk on.

A sumptuous bouquet of roses, flamed tulips, peonies, irises, poppies and a blue hydrangea spills in an S-curve from a bronze urn on a stone ledge against a dark warm background; a fallen tulip, a rose and loose petals lie on the ledge, and a bee has landed beside them.
Pink climbing roses arch over an old stone garden wall around an arched green door left ajar, warm light beyond; a bench with a straw hat sits on the gravel path, and fallen petals lie at the threshold.
Blue and violet morning glories climb a weathered white picket fence in the first light, their trumpets glowing where the low sun comes through them, heart-shaped leaves wet with dew; beside the open flowers hangs yesterday's bloom, already twisted shut.
A dandelion grows from a crack in dark asphalt in low morning sun: jagged leaves flat to the ground, one yellow flower, and a tall round seed head lit from the side, a few seeds already drifting away, long shadows across the road.
A summer cottage garden of foxgloves, cosmos and daisies, soft behind; in front, a large black-eyed Susan shows a glowing violet bullseye — the ultraviolet pattern bees see — as a bee flies in toward it.
A pink lotus opens above a misty morning pond crowded with broad round leaves beaded with silver water drops, a closed bud on a taller stalk beside it, both mirrored in the still water.
A garden just after rain: big blue hydrangeas and wet pink roses beaded with drops beside a flagstone path, puddles mirroring a clearing sky as the sun breaks through grey clouds.
Pink and white peonies in a clear glass jar on a dark wooden table against a warm grey wall, lit from the left; the largest bloom has opened all the way and is beginning to shed, and its petals lie on the table.
Desert hills after a wet winter, blanketed in orange poppies, purple phacelia and yellow goldfields under a clear sky; in front, California poppies glow with the late sun shining through their petals.
A single white tulip flamed with crimson rises from a slim green glass bottle on a stone ledge against a dark background, beside a papery tulip bulb, a small stack of gold coins and one fallen flamed petal.
A single deep red rose stands in a tall clear glass of water on a white marble ledge against a dark slate wall; below the waterline its stem appears shifted and thickened by refraction, and a bright caustic of light falls inside the glass's shadow.
A golden wheat field under a hazy summer sky, threaded with red poppies that gather into a crimson river along a furrow, a single oak on the horizon; in front, large poppies glow scarlet with the sun behind them, buds still hanging their heads.
Blue and white Colorado columbines bloom in a high alpine meadow among grasses and red paintbrush, with white aspens and jagged sunlit peaks behind under a deep blue sky.
